What is Cheque Number?

A cheque is termed as a financial instrument issued to the accountholder wherein he/she can pay specific amount mentioned in digit as well as words to the person whose name is mentioned on the cheque. The cheque number is the unique identification number of any cheque. There are different parts included in the cheque such as cheque number, MICR, Account Number and so on. So, the first six digit present on the cheque refers to the cheque number. The drawer of the cheque can use the cheque number to make a record on whom it is drawn.

How to Find Cheque Number?

It doesn’t matter if you have a SBI cheque book, HDFC cheque book or other, the check number is always placed at the same corner. Cheque number can be found written at the lowest-left hand corner of the cheque. The example of cheque number can be illustrated below-

The first six-digits represents the Cheque Number

The next nine-digits represents the MICR Number of cheque which consists of City Code, Bank Code, Branch and Code

The next six-digits represents Payor Account Number

The last two-digits represents Transaction ID

The CIF Number stands for Customer Information File Number. It refers to a unique 11-digit number that appear on the bank passbook. The CIF number is usually visible on the first page of the passbook or the cheque book. The CIF number holds importance as it carries information such as personal details, address proof, transaction history, account types, balances, loans, etc.
