Unlike other UPI Apps, WhatsApp has introduced its own version of UPI App- WhatsApp Payment App or WhatsApp Pay App through which a user can send and receive payments via WhatsApp to their contact lists. It allows users to make real-time fund transfers through a virtual address, commonly called as Virtual Payment Address (VPA).
What is WhatsApp Payment?
WhatsApp Pay was introduced in India in Feb 2018 as a part of pilot project. At that time, WhatsApp users were able to make payments under the partnership with ICICI Bank. However, WhatsApp received nod from NPCI (National Payment Corporation of India) on Feb 7, 2020 for rolling out its digital payments service is full-fledged manner. This was the WhatsApp Payment launch date in India. WhatsApp also offers various WhatsApp Payments Cashback and WhatsApp Payment Offers to the user for sending money to someone via WhatsApp Pay.
How to Activate WhatsApp Payment?
WhatsApp can be downloaded on both the Android and iOS devices free of cost. In order to activate WhatsApp Payment App, you need to update your app or you can follow the below-mentioned steps-
Step 1: For Android devices, you need to launch the app and then click on the three dots available at the top right-hand side of the app. For iOS devices, you are required to first, click on ‘Settings’ option found at the bottom right-hand corner of the app.
Step 2: Select ‘Payment’ option and then click ‘Add Payment Method’ to proceed further.
Step 3: Now you will be required to select your bank from the lists of bank you wish to make payment.
Step 4: Select your bank and ensure that your registered mobile number is linked with the bank account.
Step 5: A SMS will be sent from your registered mobile number for verification purpose.
Step 6: After successful verification, you will be required to set your UPI PIN for making future payments.
How to Send Money Using WhatsApp Payment App?
WhatsApp allows users to send money to someone who are available in their contact lists or can Scan QR Code from transferring funds. To send money via WhatsApp Pay, follow the below mentioned process-
Step 1: Select the contact from your WhatsApp contact lists to send money
Step 2: Now open the chat option and select the payment option available at the bottom right-hand side of the app. You will find Rupee symbol (₹). Click on the symbol.
Step 3: In case, the receiver hasn’t activated his/her WhatsApp Payment Account, you can transfer the money using other UPI Payment App such as Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM App and so on.
Step 4: Also, on selecting the receiver’s name, a pop-up will appear stating that the contact list has not opted for WhatsApp Payment process. For this, you can select ‘Send to UPI ID’ option.
Step 5: After selecting the receiver’s name, you need to enter the amount and UPI PIN to process the transaction.
Step 6: After the successful verification of UPI PIN, the amount will be transferred to the receiver’s bank account.
WhatsApp Payment Option: Modes of Transaction
WhatsApp Pay allows users to make payments only to those who are available in the WhatsApp contact list and have activated WhatsApp UPI ID. However, if the receiver has not yet activated the WhatsApp Pay, one can send money using the Scan QR Code option.
WhatsApp Payment Limit
A WhatsApp Payment App user can transfer money to a single VPA or multiple VPA for 20 times. However, a general WhatsApp Payment Limit is ₹1 Lakh per day. The Government of India has also set a threshold limit of ₹1 Lakh as well.
WhatsApp Payment Customer Care Number
To offer better assistance for WhatsApp Payment App services, customers can contact WhatsApp Customer Care by opening WhatsApp >> Settings >> Help >> Contact Us. Through this process, customers can get UPI related support from WhatsApp. However, there is no such official WhatsApp Payment customer care number provided yet.
