The Income Tax Department offers a significant facility for the taxpayers to track the Income Tax Refund or TDS Refund through an online mode along with the TDS Refund Status. In order to claim for TDS Refund, taxpayers are required to submit certain documents showcasing their proof of income and others.
What is TDS Refund?
A Tax Deduction at Source Refund or TDS Refund refers to the reimbursement of any excess tax amount paid by the taxpayers for a particular assessment year. The reimbursement is paid by the Income Tax Department in form tax refund. This refund is applied when the amount of tax paid is higher than the actual tax liability for that specific financial year.
TDS Refund is calculated when all the deductions and exemptions applicable are considered. To claim the TDS refund, taxpayers are required to file ITR.
When Can You Claim TDS Refund?
There are certain conditions under which taxpayers can claim TDS Refund. Some of the them are mentioned below-
- When you have paid more tax than the actual tax liability for particular financial year
- When the TDS amount deducted is more than the actual tax liability for that specific assessment year

How to Claim TDS Refund?
If you have filed your Income Tax Return, you can claim TDS refund. For this, you are required to provide your written proof of income and deduction details to Income Tax Department. Also, be careful that you provide accurate details of all your income and tax paid during the specific financial year.
Step 1: Visit the official website at https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/#/login
Step 2: Enter your PAN Number to check whether you are registered or not
Step 3: Login or Register to the portal
Step 4: Download the concerned ITR Form
Step 5: Fill-in the details, upload and submit the form.
Step 6: Now e-verify the ITR submission through Aadhaar-based OTP
Step 7: You will receive an acknowledgment and TDS refund processing email on your registered email ID
How to do TDS Refund Status Check?
There are two ways to check your TDS Refund Status-

- E-Filling Portal of Income Tax Department
Below given are the steps to claim your Income Tax Refund or TDS Refund-
NSDL Website
Step 1: Visit the official website of NSDL at https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/oltas/refundstatuslogin.html
Step 2: Fill your details such as PAN Number and Assessment Year.
Step 3: Enter the Captcha Code. Click ‘Proceed’.
Step 4: Income tax refund pending status will be displayed on the screen instantly.
E-Filling Portal of Income Tax Department
Step 1: Log in to the E-Filing portal at https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/#/login
Step 2: From your dashboard, select view returns/forms.
Step 3: From the ‘My Account’ tab, select ‘Income Tax Returns’ from the drop-down list. Click submit.
Step 4: Click on the requisite acknowledgement number displayed for the specific assessment year of filing.
Step 5: A page showing your return details along with income tax refund status will be displayed.
How to Verify TDS Refund Status?
There are certain ways through which you can verify TDS refund status. Some of them are-
- Online verification by downloading Form 26AS
- Contact jurisdictional Income Tax office
- Contact Ombudsman Income Tax Department
- Raise complaint through your Income Tax E-filing account
How to Apply for TDS Refund Reissue (In Case of Refund Failure)?
Taxpayers can also apply for TDS Refund Reissue in case of refund failure. For this, you must verify that the ITR you have filed is correct. You can also track the status of TDS refund online with the Income tax department.
Follow the below mentioned steps to apply for TDS refund reissue-
Step 1: Logon to ‘e-Filing’ Portal https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
Step 2: Click on ‘My Account’ menu and click ‘Service Request’ link.
Step 3: Select the ‘Request Type’ as ‘New Request’ and Select the ‘Request Category’ as ‘Refund Reissue’. Click ‘Submit’.
Step 4: Details such as PAN, Return Type, Assessment Year (A.Y), Acknowledgement No, Communication Reference Number, Reason for Refund Failure and Response are displayed.
Step 5: Click ‘Submit’ hyperlink located under ‘Response’ column. All the pre-validated bank accounts with status validated/validated and EVC enabled will be displayed.
Step 6: Select the bank account to which the tax refund is to be credited and click ‘Continue’. Details such as Bank Account Number, IFSC, Bank Name and Account Type are displayed for the taxpayer to cross verify the same.
Step 7: Click ‘Ok’ in popup if the details are correct and the options for e-Verification appears in the dialogue box. Choose the appropriate mode of e-Verification, Generate and enter Electronic Verification Code (EVC)/Aadhaar OTP as applicable to proceed with the request submission.
Step 8: A success message will be displayed confirming the Refund Re-issue request submission
How to check TDS Refund Reissue Status?
Step 1: Logon to ‘e-Filing’ Portal https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
Step 2: Go to the ‘My Account’ > Click ‘Service Request’ > Select the ‘Request Type’ as ‘View Request’ and Select the ‘Request Category’ as ‘Refund Reissue’

Once the Income Tax Return is filed, it takes around 3-6 months for the TDS refund amount to be credited to the taxpayer’s bank account.
There may be several reasons associated with it. Either you have any outstanding demand pending from the previous financial year or there could be error is pre-validating your bank account. One more reason might be that Income Tax Department has not processed your ITR.
