National Payments Corporation of India or NPCI FASTag is an electronic toll collection system introduced in India for digital payment at toll plazas. It is operated by NPCI and employs RFID technology for toll collection. This technology enables automatic toll payments without the need for the vehicle to halt at the toll plaza for cash payment. As the vehicle passes through the toll plaza, the appropriate amount is debited automatically. The objective of NPCI FASTag is to manage toll collection efficiently, promote digital payment, and reduce traffic congestion.
About NPCI
NPCI is a combined initiative of the RBI and the Indian Banks’ Association under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act 2007. The main objective of this collaboration was to develop a resilient Payment and Settlement Infrastructure in India.
Initially supported by ten core promoter banks, including State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, Bank of India, ICICI Bank Limited, HDFC Bank Limited, Citibank N. A., and HSBC, the organisation broadened its shareholder base in 2016 to include 56 member banks, representing diverse sectors. In 2020, NPCI further expanded its reach by incorporating new entities regulated by RBI, such as Payment Service Operators, payment banks, Small Finance Banks, and others, issuing equity shares on a private placement basis in accordance by the applicable provisions of the Companies Act, 2013.
What is NPCI FASTag?
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has created the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program to cater to India’s electronic tolling needs. NPCI FASTag is a technology device that utilises radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to facilitate toll payments in real time, even when the vehicle is in motion. This RFID tag, known as NPCI FASTag, is securely placed on the vehicle’s windscreen and allows users to conveniently make toll payments directly from the linked NPCI FASTag account.
