What is FASTag?
From a broader perspective, the FASTag system represents an electronic toll collection mechanism overseen and operated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) through its subsidiary, Indian Highway Management Co. Ltd (IHMCL).
This system utilizes Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, which employs radio waves to passively identify tagged objects, simplifying toll payments directly from a prepaid or savings account.
Vehicle owners affix a FASTag card to their vehicle’s windshield, allowing them to electronically pay toll taxes as they drive through toll plazas without the need to halt to pay the toll by cash.
Initially, FASTags were introduced as a pilot project along the Golden Quadrilateral route between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. By 2017, NHAI had introduced FASTag lanes at all 370 toll plazas within its jurisdiction. In the same year, the government mandated the use of FASTags for all new vehicles sold in India. Subsequently, NHAI enforced the mandatory usage of FASTags starting from February 15, 2021.
FASTag Issuing Banks
FASTag Issuing Banks, authorized financial institutions endorsed by NPCI, facilitate the issuance of FASTag RFID stickers for electronic toll collection. These banks play a pivotal role in the distribution and management of FASTags, which are affixed to vehicle windshields. FASTags can be acquired through these banks, either online via their websites or by visiting their branches nationwide. Users have the option to link the tag to their bank accounts or use a prepaid wallet.
You can also check your FASTag balance, reload your tag account, and get timely support from the helpline team whenever needed. The wide network of FASTag issuing banks ensures convenience and accessibility, further promoting the widespread adoption of this efficient toll payment system.
